15in x 21in, watercolor on paper, Private Collection
Part of a two part painting of an “iron and rose” series, this work was inspired from a simple concept; what would happen if I rendered the rigidity of iron grates with the sublime softness of roses?
Working in a series carries with it unique challenges, especially when the canvases are not the same dimensions. Further challenges may arise by varying the subject, even slightly.
It was while painting “Midnight Rose” that complications arose, resulting in midnight oil being burned. Tired and ready for rest after a long day and night of painting, I pressed to finish. It was well after midnight when the painting was signed.
Its companion piece is “Rose in Green Pitcher.”
